Gauge labels are commonly used in the field, but procurement should identify minimum base-metal thickness in mils or decimal inches, the member profile, yield strength, coating and intended structural classification.
ASTM C645 covers nonstructural framing members, while ASTM C955 addresses structural framing. A member should not be assumed structural based only on a familiar gauge label.
For quotation, include web depth, flange width, minimum thickness, length, punch pattern, coating and the approved framing schedule or submittal basis.
